What You Believe
COVID-19 has changed the lives of every human being on the planet, and that’s not an overstatement. We’ll see the impact of this pandemic on the economy, health industry, rules and regulations, and our own social etiquette for a generation or more. And, to top it all off, we’re being bombarded on all sides by news and rumour, science and opinion, facts and...well, less facty facts. It feels like the ground beneath our feet is turning to sand at the exact moment when the need for a foundation built on clarity, trust, and unity has never been greater.
Does this all sound terrifying? It should, because it is. I’m not going to lie to you. I can’t give you any predictions about the future, I can’t make the world a less scary place, and I can’t promise that everything will work out perfectly for you or anyone else.
What I can do is help you find your faith in it.
What’s happening right now is new, but the fear it carries is not. It all comes back to the most elemental of emotions: a fear of the unknown. To find our way through the maze of uncertainty our first response is often to latch on to anyone or anything that gives us a glimmer of hope. It’s a totally natural reaction; but it can leave us at the mercy of others to the point where we become utterly dependent on outside influences for conscience or guidance.
As a coach, I can’t tell you what to think, but I will say this: sometimes you need to sit down and establish just what it is that YOU believe in. For some people it’s a simple 3-word mantra that runs through their heads. For others it’s a five-minute long monologue that is constantly being added to and streamlined. What’s important is that you decide what it is, then subscribe to it. You let it form the cornerstone of the structure of your life.
So grab your pen and paper, brush and easel, or open your notes app, and make your core beliefs concrete. It doesn’t matter if you work with words or pictures; it doesn’t matter if anyone ever sees it but you. By making it visual you are making it real, and by making it real you are putting your faith into the one thing the world can’t shatter - yourself.
